( ain't that mister mister on the radio, stereo ) - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - spring had sprung upon the castle of hogwarts with a rather unexpected warmth. suddenly, one didn't need their dragonskin gloves in the dungeons anymore, nor did they need their don their blazers to simply venture out of their common rooms. the corridors of the school had sufficently warmed up. even the slytherins were looking slightly less like they had sticks up their asses now that the prospect of spring was so close on the horizon.
that weekend was sure to be a party and a half, what with it being both the first weekend since the snow had melted and the last trip to hogsmeade that would occur that year. everyone was itching to get out of class that friday, and as soon as the last bell had rung, most of the students were hightailing it out of the castle in order to score themselves a prime piece of grass by the lake in which to soak in the sun. a few brave souls even ventured to swim in the black lake, even though the water was still ice cold and the squid had been having bowel problems and therefore was in a foul mood as of late.
a certain rosie weasley, however, was not outside. she had remedial transfiguration lessons with her least favorite professor. it was no secret that rosie was failing half her classes and that she desperately needed help if she was to pass her sixth year. but it wasn't exactly a shock to anyone who knew rosie. she was bright, sure, but she wasn't smart. she had no ability to memorize things, and she was positively awful at most wand work. of course, she was strong in charms, and could work out a few easy defensive spells, but she was downright rubbish with transfiguration.
after being badgered for over an hour by her transfiguration teacher, waving her wand about and feeling completely useless, rosie was beat. she relished the moment her professor told her it was time to go, and she hurried down to the hufflepuff common room to change out of her uniform, slipping into more comfortable clothes, throwing a flannel on over her t-shirt, as, even though it was beginning to warm up, rosie still found it to be decidedly jeans and long-sleeves weather out.
as she rolled up her sleeves and pulled her hair back into a braid, she realized that there was still one thing she had to do that night before she was home free. groaning, she collapsed on her bed, her hand closing around the package her grandmother had sent her earlier in the week. it'd contained two sweaters, the ones rosie's grandma molly knit for her grandchildren every year. of course, her grandmother had sent her teddy's as well, mentioning something about saving postage. rosie'd been putting off bringing ted his sweater all week. but now she had no more excuses.
grabbing the package, she threw it in her bag, throwing her bag over her shoulder and making her way up and out of the castle. she supposed ted would be back in his apartment by now, especially since all the teachers were hardly needed for supervising: everyone was outside. besides, all the students were on their best behaviors; no one wanted to spend detention inside when it was so lovely outside.
rosie entered hogsmeade just as the sun was setting. she waved to a few friends as she passed a crowd of students entering the village as well. making a beeline for ted's building, it wasn't long before she was at his door. she took a deep breath, trying to clear her mind before knocking. she hadn't talked to ted in depth since christmas. she hoped it wouldn't be weird. after all, she thought they'd left things rather well, even if they were a tad impersonal and standoffish towards each other.
finally, she raised a tiny hand to the door and rapped on it four times. as the door swung open, she gave ted a smile, gesturing to the package and greeting him, "i've got something for you." okay, so it wasn't a greeting that would move anyone to tears or anything, but it was a start, right? "grams sent me yours by accident."

Hogwarts was a buzz with the climate change. Spring had sprung at the castle, and student and professors alike were enjoying the change. More students seemed to be missing their classes to enjoy a little warm weather. Ted couldn't blame them, he was tempted on the first day of sun to cancel his classes and go enjoy the warm weather, like he had done as a student. But, with OWL's and NEWT's on their way, he was a busy professor.
Although he wouldn't be taking the exams, already completing both with flying colours of course, he felt the nervousness from his fifth and seventh year students. He could divide his students into three categories. The first was like him when he was a student, they were naturals in the subject. They either didn't need to study or studied a little bit for the exam, yet they would still ace it with flying colours. Next were the normal students, who would study enough and get an average score, asked a few questions to him here and there.
Then, there were the crazies. He wouldn't call them anything different. They asked every question they could think of, sometimes not even allowing him to continue with his lecture. They would ask him during and after class, and sometimes he would be an hour after answering questions. They would find him in his office hours after class, when he was trying to prepare his next lecture. They ask him a million there too. The strange thing though? They too would ace the exam with flying colours. They would studying extremely hard for the exam as well.
It was funny, however, because when he was at the Potter's the other week for supper with Harry, Ginny, Hermione and Ron, when he brought this theory up to them they all laughed except Hermione, who looked positively angry. Ted slightly feared for his life at the look she was giving him, but Ron explained that Hermione was once a "crazy" herself. She studied way before the exams and hell, even if she didn't study, she would probably do well anyways.
Speaking of Ron and Hermione, he wondered how Rosie was doing with studying. Although she didn't have any big exams this year, what with being a sixth year, she would still have some finals that were verging her on the edge of finishing sixth year. Although the girl was extremely bright, she seemed to find it difficult to apply herself to school. She seemed to struggle with her wandwork, and for some reason Professors didn't pick this up until her fifth year, when tutoring for this sort of thing was done in first to third year.
Ted had tried to help her out with it, but then they had their blow up and everything went astray. Although over Christmas they seemed to work out their kinks, they never returned with her lessons. But Ted let her know that he was there to help if she needed him, and she simply said thanks and she would let him know. That was enough for Ted, he tried at least.
But today, on this sunny day, where most students were out enjoying the sun, Ted was locked in his apartment, baking actually. He was at the Three Broomsticks earlier grabbing a drink when a "crazy" came up to him, asking her more questions. He had kindly excused himself after he finished his drink and hid in the comfort of his apartment, like he planned to do for the rest of the day. His kitchen was now covered in a mess from the batter of cookies, but he didn't care. He would clean it later.
He had pulled out his old guitar and was strumming quietly, something he hadn't done in awhile. Funny thing about it was that Ted could play decently enough, nothing too complicated, but he couldn't sing to save his life. Some of the girls he dated in the past seemed to believe that if he could play, he could sing. Which was a load of bollocks, and he proved it to them. Only one girl let him sing a whole song, most of them stopped him right away.
Ted started to play some Beatles song when there was a knock on his door. He stopped, and feared. Did the crazys find out where he lived? He got up from his couch and wandered over to the door, peering out the hole in the door. He was pleasantly surprised to see that it wasn't a crazy, but Rosie instead. He opened the door and gave her a crooked smile. "Hey, for a second there I thought would were one of my crazy students, finding out where I lived to ask me questions." Ted chuckled, looking at the package.
"Thanks Rosie, I didn't think I was going to get one this year, it was a tad late." he said, taking it from her. He paused for a moment, if he invited her in, would she be offended? Would she run away screaming? "Would you like to come in? I'm baking some cookies." Ted asked, holding the door open, figuring that asking would better then contemplating over and over again.

( ain't that mister mister on the radio, stereo ) - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - it'd been apparent to rosie for some time that she just wasn't cut out for school. she didn't learn well sitting in classrooms all day having lectures shouted at her. she hated homework and essays, and usually they just served to made her more confused than she'd been before. she didn't care about the origin of the spell or what famous wizards had used it; all she wanted to do was be able to use it correctly in a duel. hell, that was all she really needed to be able to do, what with this war going on outside the walls of hogwarts. it wasn't as though knowing that hagar the horrible had first coined stunners would help at all in a life-or-death duel against a death eater.
and so, from this slow realization, rosie had begun to form a few plans in her mind for the following year. really, she believed she'd learned all she could possibly learn from the teachers at hogwarts. they did their best, but what she really needed was a tutor, or some hands-on coach that could help her work through things. she didn't need to be holed up in a classroom, full of kids that she could possibly injure when one of her spells went horribly and terribly wrong. therefore, rosie had made the decision that she would be dropping out of school the following year. she'd be seventeen by the time registration forms were supposed to be filled out, and if she didn't do it, there wasn't a blasted thing her parents could do about it.
naturally, she was a bit freaked out. she'd always been a bit of a people pleaser, and she knew her parents wouldn't be happy about it. they'd always encouraged her to finish her schooling. although she could always throw back in their faces the fact that neither of them had attended their seventh year of hogwarts. they couldn't exactly expect her to do something that they hadn't done themselves, right? but then again, there was the prospect of facing the rest of her family. her grandparents wouldn't be happy, nor would her brother, and least of all, teddy wouldn't be the least bit in agreement with her plan.
even after all they'd been through in the past year, rosie still held teddy's judgement in the highest regard. he'd always been a role model to her, and she knew that he knew what he was doing. she also knew that most of the time, he had her best interests at heart. which was why she wasn't so thrilled about telling him her plan. she knew he'd fight her on it, even though, in the end, it really was her decision, and her decision alone. she'd thought about not telling him, about keeping it a secret until she'd informed her parents. but then again, she needed to tell someone, needed to talk it through with someone. up until the past year, ted would've been the obvious choice. and so she was going with her gut and telling him first.
of course, this trip to his apartment hadn't exactly been with the intention of telling him. but now that she was there, staring him in the face, the prospect seemed rather comforting. after all, he seemed to be in a good, talking mood. and anyways, he wasn't about to turn her away on a friday night, when he nor she had anything better to do than talk. so why not? at his words about crazy students, she couldn't help but laugh a bit. "they still haven't found out where you live?" she asked, incredulous. "kids these days must be getting soft. y'know, i tracked down my transfiguration professor all the way to his house in scotland just to figure out whether the vanishing spell would be on the next exam."
she gave him a smile. "better late than never," she answered, off-handedly, not really noticing what she was saying. it was odd to be in such close proximity with ted, when she hadn't seen him in such a long while. he looked older, and more tired, than when she'd seen him at christmas. strange how quickly someone could change. she almost balked at his next question. running away would be so much easier than facing her fears. but she needed to get over this fear of him. because however hard she tried to make it stop, her heart still ached whenever she saw him. because she'd never really and truly gotten over him. and judging by the way things'd gone so far, she doubted she ever would.
rosie pushed the thought out of her mind. she needed to move on from this, and maybe spending a bit of time with him, as friends, would help her out. "baking cookies? how could i resist?" she asked with a grin, slipping past him inside the door.

It's hard to say exactly what prompted Ted to go into teaching. In fact, through his school years he was preparing to become an Auror. He was accepted promptly with high recommendations from Harry and Ron, not to mention the DADA professor at the time he was in his seventh year. He actually got through half the program before he went into exclusive training. His metamorphagus powers were meant to used during spy missions and the like. They started talking about how many missions he would go on due to his ability, and to be honest it freak Ted out. He wanted a life outside of work, and by the sounds of it, he wasn't going to get one.
So that was a factor. Ted wanted a family, he always had dreamed of being a husband and a dad, as cheesy as that might sound. So being at work for multiple days at a time wasn't the perfect idea for him. Next, was the fact that his Gran had gotten violently ill. He had to leave training, his Gran was who raised him. Sure Harry was there but it was a difficult time for him too, so he couldn't be around all the time. When he knew she only had a few weeks left, he gave his notice to the academy and spent all his time with his Gran.
When she passed he decided that he wouldn't return to training. So he wondered, what he could do with his life then. It was actually Molly Weasley who suggested teaching to him. He was at the Burrow with little Fred. He was trying to freeze the gnomes so it would be easier to get them out of the garden. Except the spell he was trying to use was complete bollocks. So Ted taught him the proper spell, how to wave his wand and how to pronounce it. Before anyone knew it Fred was flying all over the garden, freezing everything he saw. So Molly suggested becoming a professor.
He was glad actually. He really enjoyed teaching to be honest. He loved teaching first year their basic shield and defensive spells and enjoyed when seventh years could disarm even him. He enjoyed surprising students sneaking around and hiding in secret passage ways. Yes, there was nothing Ted saw wrong with being a professor at Hogwarts, besides annoying Slytherin's who were nasty to him and detention duty of course. Oh, and homework, but for the most part that wasn't too bad to correct.
"Jesus. Maybe I should just lock my door from you." He chuckled. Ted had to agree with her, it wouldn't take that much to track him to his home. Maybe it helped that he usually changed his appearance to look like the old barman from the Three Broomsticks when he was heading home so that no one knew it was him. He took his privacy very seriously, heck Rosie was the only cousin who came and visited him at his apartment. "You know there's these amazing creatures called owl's that can send letters such as questions? Some of you students haven't seemed to figure that out yet." he teased.
As she stepped into his apartment, he closed the door behind her, locking it. He wasn't letting any students get near his bloody place, if it was the last thing he did. He ripped the package open to reveal a blue jumper with a gold 'T' embroidered in the center. "That Gran of yours is bloody brilliant. For one she makes a sweater for each of his grankids plus me, which adds up to be like a million, and she also makes sure she makes a sweater the color you haven't had already or you've grown out of." Ted chuckled, laying it on the table.
"I only just put the cookies in, so they'll be a little while yet." he said while gesturing to the living room, hoping she'd take a seat on the couch. He did at least, after moving his guitar to lean against the window. He should really consider getting a stand so he wouldn't have to tune it every time. "So Rosie, how've you been?" he asked, wondering what she had been up to this half of the year.

( ain't that mister mister on the radio, stereo ) - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - so rosie wasn't completely thrilled about the idea of telling her parents and her friends about her plan to drop out of school. of course, she knew that was what she wanted, and she wasn't about to change her mind any time soon, but she still knew that it'd be hell for a few months. her parents weren't exactly going to let such a massive decision go without a fight, and neither was teddy. naturally, he didn't have a much of an influence in her life as he used to have, but she still knew he'd fight her on it. and even though she wished it wasn't so, she knew his disagreement with her would shake her more than her parents' would. still, rosie wasn't to be shaken.
she tilted her head a bit to the side, giving him a look. "maybe you should," she answered, a slightly seductive tone to her voice. she was slightly taken aback at how easily such a tone had spilled from her mouth; but then again, it didn't really seem weird. it was how she usually acted with ted. or, rather, how she used to act with ted before things had gotten all weird between them. rosie was reminded at that moment just how desperately she wished things were back to normal again. even if normal just meant friends.
she narrowed her eyes playfully at him, giving him a light slap on the arm. "shut up, i know what an owl is," she answered, chuckling, a smile on her face. in fact, a moment later she realized how long it'd been since he made her genuinely smile. "but you and your bloody professor friends never seem to answer owls," she finished, poking him lightly in the chest at the first 'you'. she scrunched her nose. "or maybe hokey-pokey's just really rubbish at finding out where you all live."
rosie watched him open the packaging. her own woolen sweater was back at her dorm. it'd been dark green this year, with blue accents. molly always put the oddest colors together, but rosie never minded. those lumpy sweaters were the one piece of clothing that were always there for her when she just needed to relax. "don't i know it," she answered, her arms crossed over her chest. "she hasn't repeated for me in sixteen years. sixteen. i didn't even know there were sixteen colors in the rainbow."
she collapsed on the couch as they made their way into the living room of his apartment. for some reason, all she could think about was the last time she'd been here. they'd snogged on the couch. and for some reason, that was the only thing she could think about as she sat down. she frowned for half a second, pushing the thought out of her mind and focusing on his next question, giving him a smile. "fine, i suppose," she answered simply, before pausing for a moment. she knew she should tell him about her plans, and what better time than now?
so she dove in. "well, actually i haven't been completely honest with you about why i came here," she continued, offering up a smile. "i kinda need to tell you something." she wondered how he'd react. but she really didn't need to wonder. she knew him too well not to know. clasping her hands in her lap, she glanced at the floor before looking up at him and spitting it out. "i'm dropping out of school next year." alright, so she'd said it. hadn't been too bad, right? well, that was before the backlash. before he had the chance to respond, she continued, "and before you shout your head off about how i'm not 'fulfilling my potential' or whatever bull shit's stewing in that lovely head of yours, just know that i've thought long and hard about this. and no amount of fussing on your part's gonna change my mind. y'got that, mister?" with her piece said, she figured she'd sit back and watch.

Alright, so, did you know that Ted and Rosie had dated in the beginning of the year? Weird right, him being a professor and she his student. Not to mention the age gap. Then, things got a bit testy cause they couldn't share their relationship with the public. Because if they did, Ted would get fired and Rosie would be suspended or expelled, depending on how Ted pleaded his case. Either way it would of been bad for both of them. So then they fought and ended up dating other people. Rosie dated Scorpius (who Ted absolutely hated by the way) and he tried his luck with Victoire again.
They were nice for a while but they broke it off eventually. She and Greyback were dating now and although in the past Ted wasn't the nicest bloke to the werewolf having a grudge with his father, he could see that he and Vic were really good together. But, let's get to the main picture here. Ted never really got over Rosie. He tried mind you, remembering the times he babysat her, how she was his student, comparing her to other people her age to see the gap between them. He must of tried a million things to get her off his mind sometimes, but it was too bloody hard sometimes.
So he believed that he heard things. He did not here any sort of seductive tone coming out of her lips as he mentioned locking the door. Ted must of been imagining things. Because frankly, he knew that things weren't ever going to be the same as before. He couldn't let it after all. He was snapped out of his thoughts when she smacked him playfully on the arm, a crooked smile gracing his lips.
"I answer owls, when they're actually relevant. I don't answer the fan mail though, I find my third and fourth years get a little braver and don't mind sending me mail about my hair." he chuckled, winking at her. "They can't resist a Lupin after all." he then flexed his muscles for good measure, then laughed. It felt good to laugh with Rosie again. It seemed way too long since the last time they had sat down and talked. Which he supposed would of been Christmas time. My did time fly.
It was all going well at that point. They had sat down on the couch, and he had to forbid himself for remembering what they did last on it. And he was doing a good job at forgetting about it. He was just about to ask her what she planned on doing next year in preparation for her career when she laid the bombshell on him. He nearly blew when she said she wasn't going back to school, except she told him not to. Rosie knew him too well sometimes. He listened, he waited for her reasoning, but they never came. His feet tapped against the floor rapidly. Anxious and angry, not a good mix.
When she finished, he stood up, pacing the length of his living room. "No. Absolutely not. No. No. No." he repeated over and over before he finally turned to her, looking her straight in the eye. "There is so many things wrong with this 'idea' of yours. One, if you don't complete school, you won't be able to become a healer or a auror, or a Wizengamot councilor or whatever you want to be. Two, you haven't completed your full training in various courses, meaning your still unprepared for the real world. Three, Hermione Weasley will never let you go through with this. Four, you can not live on your own, there's a war going on and if your actually going to do this you won't be living with your parents. Five, you have no money, where will you live? Eat? Sleep? Use the bathroom? Six--" he would of continued, if she hadn't cut him off here.

( ain't that mister mister on the radio, stereo ) - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - she supposed having a regular chat with teddy shouldn't have been that out of place. but after their short, secret fling at the beginning of the year, a rather vocal break up, and a rather awkward reconciliation near chistmas, rosie supposed it was rather out of place. perhaps their time away from each other had helped; she knew she missed him, and she'd do practically anything to be able to talk to him the way the used to. fake it 'til you make it, right? she could pretend they were all right, hold a relatively civil conversation, maybe try and fix the rift. after all, rosie was nothing if she wasn't an optimist.
she gave him a look. "they don't have to be bloody relevant. the point of a professor is to have someone who'll answer all your irrelevant questions," she answered him. "or, at least, that's the only use i can find for any of my professors." she shot him a wink, a smirk playing over her mouth. it was a relief to be able to joke with him, to not have to worry that things would get weird if she said the wrong thing. because honestly, she'd buried everything that had happened to them in the past. rosie just wanted her friend back, even if they had to pretend like their short-lived fling had never happened. and to get teddy back in her pod of friends, there was no price too steep.
she snorted at his last comment. "no one can resist a lupin," she answered, the tone of her voice mimicking a bit of the seduction it'd held earlier. merlin, what was wrong with her today? two times within minutes of each other. perhaps she really needed to get her vocal chords checked out. it was weird enough being in the same apartment with him, she didn't need to amp up the oddity of it by sending him mixed signals. but then again, it wasn't like she was trying to send him mixed signals. it just happened.
rosie supposed she knew the only plausible thing for him to do would be to blow up. and that was exactly what he did. she sat patiently on the couch as he jumped from the couch and began to pace; her hazel eyes watched him in his progress to and fro across the room. she bit her lip a bit as she waited for him to start, worried about what he'd say. but at the same time, she had to keep reminding herself of all the reasons that she wanted, needed, to do this; there would be no changing rosie weasley's mind. then again, was there ever?
she raised her eyebrows, giving him a look. "yeah, conventionally, there are some major holes, but when the hell have i ever followed the rules, ted?" she realized the next moment that the most prominient time she hadn't followed them was in her rather romantic venture with the man standing in front of her. she scrunched her nose, pushing the comment aside and plowing ahead. "one, there's no way i'm wasting my life on some boring job i absolutely hate. can you even imagine me as a wizengamot counciler? seriously. two, i'm too rubbish at magic for any of the lessons in this school to work out on me. besides, you can just teach me anything i need to know. three, i do believe you're forgetting that my mother didn't attend school her seventh year either, and she turned out pretty bloody fantastic, didn't she? fourth one's easy: someone's always looking for a flat mate, right? and if i happen to score one who's a creepy drug-dealer/death eater/pervert, then i've lived a good life. five, i'll...beg in the streets."
she paused. "it's not like everything's set in stone, ted, but i'll figure it out. i always do." a rather self-impressed look came over her and she smiled at him, wiggling rather imporantly in her seat and holding her head high. "and you're going to help me."

Ted scoffed as she winked at him. God, this made him believe things were nearly back to the way they were. Here they were, joking and laughing on his couch like nothing was wrong. Like at the beginning of the year neither of them snogged the senses out of one another on this very couch, that they hadn't gotten in a fight of epic proportions nor had they had a awkward reunion over Christmas break. No, this was Teddy and Rosie, just like it had been for all those years.
"Well I don't reply to irrelevant mail because some of it is, and this is quoting mail I have received; 'You look hot in a sweater vest. Meet me in the closet in the third floor if you want to have a good time'. I kid you not, a fifth year sent that to me." He shivered again about how creepy it was. It was from that letter on that he decided he wouldn't be responding to all mail, so that he wouldn't continue to get letters like these. He also thought that he only wanted one girl thinking he looked 'hot' in anything, but he pushed those thoughts away, again.
Okay, now, this time he heard her tone again. Or so he thought. What if it was just his subconscious telling him that that's what he wanted to hear, and not actually what she said at all. His heart raced at the prospect but he shut it down immediately. There was no getting his hopes up after all. They had crossed that bridge already, and he was positive she wasn't going to cross it again. So in response, he winked. "I would certainly hope so." he said, his voice a bit think with emotions. But he left it at that, straightened himself up, and continued with their conversation.
He stopped as she cut him off. All he could think of was the major rule she broke this year, with dating a professor. Yah she could get in trouble be being out of bed, snogging Malfoy in the closet or even sneaking to Hogsmead on a unassigned weekend but her worst by far this year would be that she had dated him. Shaking his head, he began to pace again as she listed off 'answers' to her bloody belief in leaving Hogwarts. He couldn't imagine doing anything like that, leaving she was out of her mind.
He stopped, flabbergausted. "I'm going to help you? I'm going to help you? That's rubbish!" Ted said, his voice getting a few octaves higher in anger. But at least his head wasn't showing it. It was a black color today, just like his godfather's in fact. He began pacing again, thinking and frankly nervous. "In all my years Rosie I've never heard you say one daft thing, until today. There's no way your not going back to school next year." he rambled, one of his hands reaching up to tug on his hair, the other rested on his hip like a fretting mother would be doing.
"No, I can't imagine you with the Wizengamot, but I was just pulling jobs off the top of my head. I can imagine you as a healer though, something you would need to go to school for. And yes, I could teach you everything, but why get just me when others can teach you? Your mother may have not completed her final year at Hogwarts, but she was helping your uncle run from Voldemort. They had a bloody good reason. Next, you are most certainly NOT living with some random drunkard or a bloody drug dealer. I will be making sure of that. And you know perfectly well I'm not going to let you live on the streets." Ted said, breathing out. That was a mouthful.
He stopped in front of her, rubbing his face. "Look Rosie, I don't know why you want to do this. I know some of your friends and cousins are going to be gone next year but it's not like you won't see them ever again. And what's one year going to do?" he pleaded with her to see his side of things. Hogwarts was the safest place in the world. At least if she was here he could keep an eye out for her. And make sure she was safe. And make sure some lunatic wouldn't rape her or something. To be honest, he was more afraid of her going out into the real world then he thought.
Maybe it was because he knew once she left Hogwarts, he'd probably never see her again. And that hurt more then it should.

( ain't that mister mister on the radio, stereo ) - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - the moment he mentioned something about her being daft, rosie's eyes narrowed in their sockets. she'd been told rather frequently over the past couple years that she wasn't the brightest bulb in the box. and whether it was a joke or otherwise, it still hurt everytime she heard it. she knew she wasn't as smart as most other people. but why on earth did people feel the need to bring it up constantly? even now, when teddy was just trying to make a point, and was actually justified using the word, rosie couldn't help but let it sting. and she was defensive enough about it that she let herself get angry about it.
she gesticulated wildly. "and that's exactly why i'm not coming back next year, ted. i'm daft, i'm stupid, i'm f-cking rubbish at everything and i'm sick and tired of being told that every day and having to sit through lessons that i'll never, in a million bloody years, understand." there wasn't a smile on her face anymore. in fact, she sounded almost close to tears. ted's argument had awoken something in her, causing her to say things that she never would've said had she been her usual self. "and what's the point anyways? there's a bloody war going on, in case you haven't noticed. there are people out there fighting and dying, and i'm pretty sure they knew the same heap of bullshit that i've been forced to learn. it didn't do them any good, so why would it do me any?"
she made a face at him when he suggested she be a healer. "be realistic, ted. i'm rubbish at potions; there's no way they'd even consider me for a job at mungo's. besides, i'm not gonna waste my life doing something i don't actually wanna be doing. why can't i just work in a shop or something? what'd be so horrible about that?" she asked, genuinely wanting to know. she'd always dreamed of being something great, like an auror or an obliviator. but then she'd grown up, and she'd realized that there was no way in hell she'd ever be talented enough to go into one of those professions. she couldn't pretend any longer that they were realistic ambitions.
rolling her eyes, she continued to gesticulate. for some reason, rosie happened to have a habit of flailing her arms around wildly when she was talking about something she was particularly passionate about. or when she was frustrated. one of the two. now was more the latter. "cuz half the time, i don't have a f-cking clue what they're talking about. they treat me like i'm an idiot if i don't get things right away." she paused, her voice dropping in volume as she continued, glancing away from him for a moment, almost embarrassed to continue. "but you never do that. and, yeah, maybe i should just stick it out and deal with it, but i shouldn't have to feel like i'm stupid all the time, should i?"
rosie couldn't help but smile a bit at his talk about him making sure she wouldn't live on the streets. "and how exactly will you make sure of that?" she asked, an eyebrow raised, a slightly joking tone in her voice for half a moment. it amazed her that, even in the middle of an argument, she could still find something to smile about. but then again, that usually only happened she was arguing with teddy.
just as quickly, though, she was angry again. "you don't get it, do you?" she asked him, trying desperately to make him understand. "it's not about them. it's not about the fact that they're leaving. this is my choice. and i've told you why i've decided that, you just haven't been listening." again, she sounded almost close to tears. rosie didn't know why she'd told him. maybe it was because she wanted him to understand, to get it, to encourage her. and even if she'd known that he wouldn't she could still try to make him understand. she just felt so bloody lonely, especially since she hadn't told anyone. if the world, and her parents, were against her decision, couldn't she at least have someone on her side?
"ted, in a year, the death eaters could've killed us all. and if they did, i wouldn't have wanted to waste my last year trying to learn rubbish that doesn't matter."

Post by Teddy Remus Lupin on Apr 10, 2012 0:54:37 GMT
All of the sudden it was like the happiness in the room got sucked right out the window. This wasn't the first time this had happened to Rosie and Ted and he doubted it would be the last. It didn't mean he liked it anymore, in fact he wished that they wouldn't have these arguments, that they could just be happy all the time. But, according to some, when life was like that, it got boring, so a fight along the way was a good thing. How Ted didn't see exactly.
Her hands started flailing as she argued and he knew she was getting upset with him. Her smile was gone and she was cursing, which was never a good sign. His hands moved down to his sides and he looked almost like a child being scolding for a moment before he went to sit beside her. "Your not daft Rosie and I apologize for saying it. I know you struggle with your classes but hell, everyone does at some point or another. Besides, half the professors at Hogwarts now are too bloody old to be teaching." he sighed, running a hand through his hair.
But as she said what she had learn was "heaps of bullshit" he got angry. "Okay, I'll admit the Divination's or Muggle Studies probably won't help you fight in the war, but do you really think Defensive Against the Dark Arts is heaps of bullshit? Or you know Charms or Transfigurations? Things that you can use to protect and use against the Death Eaters?" he said, the hand resting in his lap formed a fist. "Sometimes this 'bullshit' can come in handy. And you know what? I bet all those students in the Second War used this 'bullshit' to protect themselves at attack Death Eaters." he said, shaking his head, telling himself to cool down.
He gave her a confused look. He remember when she was little she wanted to become a whole bunch of things when she was older, but he remembered Healer sticking out the most. He supposed her poor grades in school made her believe she couldn't become anything, which actually hurt Ted's heart to think about, since Rosie was brilliant. "There's nothing horrible at working at a shop. I mean look at your uncle, he's doing brilliant with his. Do you want to work in a shop Rosie? Is that what you want to do for the rest of your life?" He asked her, his voice certainly a lot calmer now then it was five minutes ago.
He smiled softly, glad that he didn't do anything to make her feel 'daft'. He had been slightly worried when she had been going on with how the professors made her feel that he was included in that. "I'm glad I don't Rosie. And they shouldn't, and if you told me the names of them that have directly told you you were daft I'd go beat them up now. Because their absolutely bonkers if they think that." Ted said, biting his cheeks realizing he was letting other emotions out with that statement.
"I'm not sure yet." he said, in response to keeping her off the streets. He was still trying to work that out in his head, and so he didn't see the smile that crossed her face at the time. Just the anger in her face as the small spec of happiness vanished once again. He looked up as her voice sounded close to tears. "Oh Jesus Rose, I'm sorry. Don't cry over me anymore, please? I get it now." he said, his arms opening to hug her, to pull her to him before stopping himself, knowing it was completely wrong. They hadn't.. done that since they were dating. That would probably bring up too many emotions.
He thought for a few moments in silence. "Alright. If your going to do this, which I know you are because your a stubborn mule, there's got to be some ground rules." he said, looking up into her eyes, watching her reaction.

( ain't that mister mister on the radio, stereo ) - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - for some reason, things with her and teddy never really stayed calm for long. they could joke and chat and laugh, but they always ended up arguing about something. likewise, they always seemed to resolve their arguments rather quickly; or rather, it seemed that way until their major falling out earlier in the year. but before that, they tended to make up almost as soon as they were mad at each other. things with them were like a rather intricate dance. the moment they were calm, all hell would break loose, and as soon as they were fighting, both would want to be back in each other's good graces as soon as humanly possible.
rosie saw the look on his face as she yelled at him, almost as though he were getting punished for something. instantly, she felt bad for raising her voice at him. when he came to sit down next to her, she leaned against the arm of the couch, pulling her legs up and tucking them under herself, turning to face him as he spoke. "don't flatter me, ted," she answered, her voice sounding tired, all anger gone from her tone. "i do a little worse than struggle; i'm failing pretty much all of them, except astronomy, but when the hell would i ever be using that in the real world? star charts won't fend off death eaters."
she sighed. "it wouldn't be heaps of bullshit if i could actually do a proper spell without setting something on fire. it'd be fine and dandy to have it all under my belt, but i just don't, and judging by the way things have gone for the last six years, i'm not gonna get any better. hate to break it to you, but being able to shoot rubber ducks and other odd trinkets out of my wand by accident won't really help me much in life." she narrowed her eyes when he continued. she could tell he was angry, but she'd learned over the years that backing down when he got mad wouldn't help her in the least; it was better to stand her ground. "yeah, and sometimes, they died anyways. sometimes, even knowing all this stuff didn't help them."
rosie knew he was probably confused. when she'd been little, she'd had so many dreams. almost too many. and she'd told them all to him. but now that she was actually here, now that she was almost of age, she was realizing that those dreams were just that; dreams. she didn't have the ability to chase after them, because they weren't within reach. they never had been. she needed to be realistic, even if it meant she'd be stuck working in a shop for the rest of her life. "no ted, it's not what i want to do with the rest of my life. but it's what i'm stuck with. i'm not smart like you are; i can't work at the ministry or be a healer or a teacher. i just don't have the brains for it."
she gave him a smile. it was nice to know that he was still on her side, at least on that point. she did royally detest some of her professors, and there wasn't a one of them, besides teddy, that she was comfortable with enough to actually open up to. she'd always wanted to stand up to them and tell them that she wasn't actually as stupid as they thought she was, but she'd never had the guts. "y'know, i think you're the one who's bonkers," she answered, a slight smile on her face. "after all, you're the one who thinks i'm actually smart. god, they'd probably laugh if they could hear you now."
she pushed aside his worries about her crying, swallowing hard and pushing the tears back. she didn't need to be emotional now, especially not around teddy. god knew what would happen. things always seemed to get out of hand with them when they got emotional. or whenever she cried, really. for some reason, he couldn't stand the sight of it. she sniffed, waving off his words, and instead listening when he began to speak again.
"ground rules? goodness, you sound like my mother," she answered him, the tone of the conversation turning light again. it was odd, how much like a rollercoaster their conversations tended to be. the things that happened, the way they talked was always a tad unexpected. she scrunched her nose, before finally relenting. "depends what they are."

Ted frowned slightly, hearing how she put herself down. He hated when just some student from some house did that to themselves, so you can only imagine how he felt when Rosie was doing it to herself. "I'm not flattering you, just because this sorta stuff doesn't come easy doesn't mean you haven't a clue. I mean, it's not like you get lost wandering to the bathroom and back." he said, a small smile on his face, trying to lighten her dampen mood.
Rosie had learned some important skills over the years Ted noticed. One being that backing down on him wasn't a good sign, and as she defended herself he got slightly proud. Most of the cousins, when arguing with Teddy, would usually agree with him. Either because he was older, he was smarter or because he was just Teddy and 'Teddy was always right'. It was never that way with Rosie, and that seemed to ground him, reminding him he wasn't some super hero or anything. Hell, sometimes with Lily one could say they walked on water.
"With a little practice and a patient teacher you'd be fine. That's the problem with most professors, they forget how hard things are when you first learn them. It seems trivial after years and years of the same thing, but that's why you have to change it up." Ted said, playing with his odd socks. He now leaned against the other arm of the couch, indian style. He knew he could say all he wanted about patience and practice but it would go in Rosie's ear and out the other. She was stubborn, and he knew sometimes there was no such thing as reasoning with her.
He shook his head. "There's tons of things you can do besides working in a shop. You've just got to go out there and look for it. Get inspiration and all that junk. And you know what? If you try something and you hate it just go looking again. That's what I did after all." he said, a soft smile on his face. He felt calmer now for some reason, he didn't feel quiet as angry. Maybe it was because he could smell his favorite cookies now as they baked in the oven. It was one of the smells he could smell in his love potion after all.
Ted chuckled lightly. "That's what you think Rosie, but in fact I know I'm not the only professor who thinks your smart. There s a few who don't think you apply yourself properly but theres a few of us who know your smart." Ted said, leaning over a flicking her nose with the tip of his finger, a small crooked smile plastered on his lips. He watched as she swallowed her tears and gave her a knowing look. We she got emotional and cried both of them went bonkers, to the point they couldn't control their actions. Hence the space between them at the moment. It was for the best after all.
"Well there'll need to be some when you bring up this plan to your Mum. Do you think she's going to be any better then I was?" Ted chuckled, thinking for a moment. "Alright, number one, your Dad will be more easily convinced then your Mum so let's start with what she'll want. You can bring up the argument that she didn't go to her seventh year but she'll have ten times a million better comebacks to that then you'll have." Ted chuckled, knowing how crazy Hermione was about her children schooling. "So I'll be tutoring you. Preparing you for your NEWT. You won't have to do any but your Defense Against the Dark Arts, but getting one NEWT will be better then none in your mother's books." he said, pausing to let that sink in and to let her come up with an excuse to why she couldn't do that.
"Next is your Dad, who will be more worried about your safety then anything. Getting a flat with a stranger is out. Getting a flat by yourself will be out too. You may be seventeen but even I know you won't be ready to live on your own. Hell, I'm not even the best at it yet." Ted chuckled, thinking of the mishaps he had had over the year in this new place. "I'm assuming you won't want to live with them after this year anyways, because your mother is going to make you go insane so the only option I'm seeing right now is coming here to live with me." he paused again, letting that info sit with him. He remembered at one point looking forward to having Rosie live with him, he wouldn't imagine it was like this however.
He looked over at her again. "I mean, you could live with Victoire if you wanted..." he could help but laugh. He knew she and the blonde weren't the best of friends. "Okay, here's the last one. This is more to get your parents on the ball with this plan. Now, I'd be more the happy to pay for everything, but I know your Mum won't be happy with that idea. So you'll get some sort of part time job to make a bit of extra cash to help me 'pay' for stuff. Honestly you can just use it for yourself because the school helps me pay for this flat." he said, a soft smile on his face again. Could he do this? Could he live with Rosie under the same roof?
Could he keeps his emotions in check? He wasn't all that sure.

( ain't that mister mister on the radio, stereo ) - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - she couldn't help but smile when ted told her she wasn't daft. of course, he'd told her it before, but she doubted she'd ever believe him. she'd heard it too much over the years; it was almost like her parents telling her. and rosie had stopped believing all the nice things her parents told her about herself over the years. after all, parents always fawned over their children. she laughed. "welll...i can't say that's never happened to me."
rosie didn't want to hear more about how she needed to practice. she knew she did, her professors told her that all the time. they figured that maybe, if she waved her wand around enough, by some miracle, a perfect spell would come out. but rosie knew better. if there was one thing she was, it was hard working; she'd practiced spells for hours, and somehow, she still could never manage to get them right. sure, charms wasn't bad, and when ted helped her with defense against the dark arts, she didn't do bad. but there was so much more that she needed to know, and practice alone wouldn't help.
"i've practiced, ted," she answered, futzing with one of the buckles on her heels. "nothing's helped. maybe i should just accept that i'm a lose cause and move on with my life." she knew that wouldn't go over well with him. no matter how rubbish she was at something, ted never seemed to lose faith that she could do it. and a part of her wanted to hug him for it, but the other part of her wanted him to stop being so damn stubborn. she couldn't do it, and she knew it. so why could he never accept it?
she shrugged. "if all else fails, i'll throw my wand away and go life with muggles. after all, they seem to have loads of useless jobs that don't require credentials. ooo, maybe i'll be a yoga instructor or something." she mused on the thought for a moment, trying to picture herself in a yoga studio, and failing epically. of course, she'd never been too terribly graceful, although she supposed she could be considered flexible. and anyways, muggles were just the epitome of adorable; they always seemed to think they knew what they were doing, even if they really hadn't got a clue.
rosie wrinkled her nose. it was odd to be affectionate with ted after so long. she'd gotten rather used to the stand-offishness, even if she didn't exactly enjoy it. "i see you haven't talked to greyback, then," rosie replied, making a face at the mention of her care of magical creatures professor. things never really went well, considering rosie was absolutely terrified of large magical creatures. "she thinks i'm a total pansy. and probably an airhead too." perhaps their personalities never really meshed well together, but professor greyback and rosie had never seen eye to eye on much of anything. after all, there were certain large hairy beasts that rosie believed should better be left alone.
she rolled her eyes at his start to what she knew would be a long-winded lecture about the importance of telling her parents in the correct fashion. "ted, they don't need to like it or agree with it. i'll be seventeen by the time the next school year starts, and whether they like it or not, i'm not going, and there's not a thing they can do to stop me." she felt rather unlike herself at that moment. and maybe it was because she was finally able to make a decision by herself without her parents and family looking over her shoulder. if she really was going to do this, she wasn't going to accept criticism from anyone, even her parents.
"i could probably pass the astronomy one already," she answered. "and with a bit of help, i might be able to scrape by at charms. and maybe herbology." that was three n.e.w.t.s she'd have under her belt, and with teddy's help at dada, it'd be four. four n.e.w.t.s could get her a job somewhere, right? her eyebrows furrowed a moment later though. "you're sure you won't mind tutoring me? i mean, i know you've got a lot to do with school and all; i could find someone else if you haven't got the time." she knew ted was just trying to be nice, but she didn't want him to commit to something that he honestly didn't have the time for. the last thing he needed was more stress.
she narrowed her eyes at him, a smile spreading across her face. "well, of course you're not good at living on your own, you numpty. you can hardly cook for yourself without setting something on fire," she teased him. rosie'd always figured she could probably live on her own if it was totally necessary. sure, she wouldn't like it all that much; it'd be a bit lonely. but then again, when had anything in the world ever been about want? if she needed to do this, then she would, simple as that.
she couldn't help but raise her eyebrows a bit at his next proposal. after everything he'd said, he'd just slipped that last one in there rather covertly, hadn't he? sneaky teddy. "you really think that's a good idea? i mean, look at us, we can hardly be in the same room as each other without going mental and screaming our heads off," she reasoned with him. of course, the sound of living with teddy next year was getting better and better the more she thought about it. but at the same time, she couldn't do that to him. he was being generous enough helping her work through this; she wasn't about to barge in on his private living quarters.
and so she balked a bit. "look ted, i can't just invade your flat. i'll get a job, and i'll find someplace cheap. if my dad has a problem with it, then he'll just have to deal with it. but i'm not about to make you support me as well as yourself. it's bloody brilliant of you to offer, but i really can't accept. i mean, i can't just live off you like a leech for the rest of my life. sometime i'll have to go out there on my own, and what better time than now?"

Ted laughed with her. Was it really this easy? To fall back into them? I mean, they weren't going to be all lovey dovey that was sure. But they were back to being Ted and Rosie just like that. He was nervous at first letting her come into his flat but now he wondered why he'd ever feel like that about Rosie. He had known her her entire life, they had been friends for pretty much the same time. Except for the break up, Ted can't think of a moment where they weren't friends. And it was nice to have that, a friend to fall back on.
And that's what she was. Despite the age gap between them, Rosie and Teddy were best friends. They had grown a part a little this year sure but that wouldn't replace the summers and Christmas's they spent together, just being foolish and telling each other secrets and the like. Whenever he had to 'babysit' Rosie it had been more like hanging out with a friend. Where Ted was childish, Rosie was mature, and because of that they were never bothered by the age gap. Until this year of course, when everything changed.
"You are certainly not a lost cause." Ted said, crossing his arms across his chest. If she seriously thought he would back down from this argument she was wrong. Sure there were times where he'd let her have her way, but when it came to this subject, he always believed in her. "You just haven't had the right teacher is all. Professors are lazy now a days, I sit with a student all night if I have to to make sure they learn the proper spell." Ted said, giving Rosie a look. As in, expect the worst from him, he wasn't going down without a fight.
He gave her a blank stare. Yoga? He had to mule around his brain for a moment to remember what the freaking Muggles did with that. Seriously, Ted lived a sheltered Wizard lifestyle, especially since he lived in a total wizarding community now. He knew they did a lot of stretching, and were flexible. That's about it however, he remembered Hermione trying to convince Molly to do it sometime ago. "Um, I guess so. I mean, you're flexible." Ted said, feeling totally out of place.
He chuckled. "Ursala's more bark then bite. Seriously, you're a good student Rosie." Ted said, shaking his head, knowing at this point she wasn't going to be listening to him anytime soon. "I know they don't need to agree with it, but do you want to get in a big fight with your Mum and not speak to her?" he question, with one eyebrow raised. Ted knew at one point she and her mother were very close to one another, but he wasn't sure if they drifted over the years or not. The way Hermione spoke fondly of her daughter however, he would assume they were still close.
He smiled, pleased that she was interested in taking more then the one NEWT. He thought he would have to convince her to do that. "I was fairly good at Charms, so I could help you with that. Herbology I'm lousy at, but I can get you the proper help if you're interested." Teddy said, a soft smile on his face. As she continued however, he shook his head. "Honestly I don't mind at all. I've kept all my lesson plans from this year which I'll probably just use again next year, since everything went off without a hitch. Hell, it'll be entertaining." he spoke, a crooked smile plastering his face.
Ted scoffed as she teased him. "I do perfectly fine cooking thankyouverymuch." He said, a proud smile on his face. But, it quickly dropped, when he remembered he was baking. Without saying anything to her he jumped from the couch and flew into the kitchen. Luckily nothing was burnt, just slightly crispy around the edges. Ted didn't really mind that anyway. He threw the cookies on a plate and filled two glasses with milk. He levitated the cookies over to the coffee table as he took the two glasses of milk by hand. "If you say anything, you get none." he muttered, placing the glasses on the table and grabbing three cookies in his hand.
As she started going on about nonsense, Ted tried to listen but all he could believe was it a load of bull crap. She tended to overthink situations sometimes, and he was sure they could work this out fine. Besides, it wasn't like he was forgetting what they were like together, the arguing and all. "Look, you're not going have the money to live in a flat right away. So if you live with me, you can work to get your own money to go off and live by yourself. Honestly, I don't mind, the company will be nice. I mean I was getting kinda lonely here, I was thinking about getting a dog this summer to fill the void." Ted said, a smile on his face.
"So you won't be a leech. We'll share all the expenses yah? Food and the rent and the like. And it'll be only for the year okay? Once you've done some NEWT's and saved up enough money you can go and be free of old me, alright? Rosie, your my friend, I just want to help you with I can. Is that so much to ask?" Ted asked, taking the last bite of his cookie.

( ain't that mister mister on the radio, stereo ) - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - she knew it couldn't be this easy, falling back into their regular patterns. sure, it seemed like they were getting on in their usual way now, but something would surely ruin it all later, woudln't it? being them again wasn't just going to happen out of the blue. or, at least, she didn't think it would. she thought it'd be more difficult than this. unless it wasn't, and they were both just making a big deal out of nothing. maybe falling back into how they'd been, like nothing had even happened in the first place, wouldn't be all that hard.
and for a moment, it was nice to just relish in the feeling of having her best friend back. because no matter how close she was with scorpius or zagen or nate, ted had always been her absolute best friend. maybe not based on the time that they spent together, but rather how well he knew her, and the fact that he'd known her longer than practically anyone other than her closest family. and somehow, they'd never gotten bored of each other over their long sixteen years of friendship. so yeah, maybe they got into fights more often than best friends should, and they might've f-cked everything up when they'd tried to turn it into romance, but they were still them, and he was still him. her best friend, the one she could always rely on.
she grinned at him. "and that's why i need you to teach me. cuz you won't blow your top when i turn your desk into a giant rubber duck," she answered, still smiling. of course, she knew ted was one of the best teachers at hogwarts. and maybe that was because he seemed to work a lot harder than most of them; he was always there for his students. in rosie's case, a tad too much, but she preferred to push that out of her mind as soon as it came to the surface.
rosie couldn't help but snort at his comment about her flexibility. she couldn't help but remember all the interesting things they'd experimented with when they were dating, but tried her best not to think of that. they were friends, right? she figured she shouldn't ruin that, even if she couldn't help but still look at ted in that way. "you would know, wouldn't you?" she answered teasingly, not being able to help the slight raise of one of her eyebrows that hinted at something almost suggestive. damn her lack of self control. he was making it too easy to slip back into the 'they' that they'd been when they were dating; rosie just needed to restrain herself.
she shrugged, knowing full well that he had her beat on that point. no, she didn't want a fight with her mother, nor with her father. she was too close to the pair of them for that to even be a possibility. "even so, i shouldn't have to jump through hoops, ted," she answered, crossing her arms over her chest, the fingers on her right hand absent-mindedly fiddling with the end of her braid. "i'll be of age; i should be able to do whatever the f-ck i want, shouldn't i?"
"i could always ask 'uncle' neville for help, couldn't i?" she asked, musing on the possibilities. although professor longbottom wasn't technically related to them, their families had always been close. and rosie and him had taken a special liking to each other, especially once they figured out their common love for herbology. they always traded plants for christmas and birthdays; rosie found him to be quite amusing. "but don't you have...i dunno, papers to grade? detentions to handle? all that professor rubbish?" rosie found it particularly hard to believe that ted was ready to set aside time in his schedule to teach her, of all people. first of all, teaching her in and of itself would be hell, and second, she knew that newer teachers always got the crappier shifts when it came to detentions and night time hall-monitoring.
"my lips are sealed," she aswered, making a motion like zipping her lips shut as he set the plate of cookies down and handed her her milk. with a mutter of thanks, she dug in; it'd been almost three hours since she'd eaten anything and she was absolutely starving. she continued to eat as he started talking, and something about the look in his eyes told her that he hadn't really been listening to her, and that nothing in the world could change his mind at that moment.
maybe it was the fact that there was the lovely feeling of warm cookie settling into her stomach, or maybe it was the colors of the sunset streaming in through the window, the ones that always gave her chills. or maybe it was just the fact that ted's words were making sense to her, that she wanted them to make sense, because she genuinely wanted to live with him. sure, it wasn't a good idea, and she sure as hell knew that. but she didn't really give a damn right now, and so instead of fighting him on it any longer, she just smiled and answered. "okay, fine. but i get to name the dog."
