A thud snapped him awake, sitting up quickly in the chair hands on the table. His eyes scanned quickly around the library, heart beating hard against his chest. His hands gripped on the table shutting his eyes tight to focus his breathing and calm himself. He dosed off...he dosed off in the library.
Sighing, Kleos opened his eyes resting his face into his hands, trying to calm his mind and his body. A shudder ran threw his form, his head throbbed. "Need to focus...need to calm down. Focus. Your fine, he was taken care of, no reason to be jumpy." And yet, the wear still was. Ever since a Mr. Dalakis had found him that night, and used him repeatedly and made him hurt like hell, his body wouldn't stop rethinking about that. Nor would it stop bugging him.
his hands were cold, his skin burning. his nails dug into his sides and back, punches thrown and received. each hit left a brand new bruise on his form, each hit landed hard. he couldn't protect himself from the vampires attacks, for he was bound hard. his clothes were torn to shreds and he was left weaken as the vampire used him as he pleased.
Sighing bitterly, Kleos rested his face on his arms unable to look at his work any longer or anything. Sighing he kept his head down, but heard someone come near by. He merely gave a glance at the source. "Dexter...right?"

He had come in here to scout out some texts on vampiric cultural anthropology, because he'd been talking to this vampire and he was brilliant. What he found instead was his big brother.
At least, he supposed it made sense to think of him as a big brother. He didn't actually know Kleos all that well, and Kleos didn't talk much. Dexter, on the other hand, talked quite a lot. Even after being sorted into Kleos's House, Dexter had made sure not to say much unless Kleos did. He was trying to do better at not being a nuisance.
Still, though, not-talking with Kleos was nice. He got a lot of reading done, and especially around the full moon, having someone with a familiar smell was comforting when Caddie was away.
Dexter almost smiled when he heard Kleos mumbling to himself - it was nice to know it ran in the family - but he didn't, quite.
Something had happened to Kleos. Dexter knew it from Caddie's tight expressions and the way Auntie Ursula moved - just angry. Of course, no one would tell Dexter exactly what it was.
But something had happened to him. His big brother wasn't okay.
Dexter absolutely ached to ask him...something, anything, but he bit his tongue. Dexter didn't like to answer questions when he wasn't okay. It certainly wouldn't be fair to make someone else do it.
But then Kleos glanced in his direction and said, quite clearly, "Dexter...right?"
Dexter blinked owlishly at his brother - they'd just talked the other day, when he'd asked Kleos about Pavel - but he chose not to bristle. Something Very Bad had happened to Kleos. He could forgive him for not being able to keep everything on the right shelves in his head.
So he just nodded, offering Kleos a small smile before the book he'd been sleeping on drew his eye. "Hello." He went up to the table and looked curiously at the book before lifting his eyes back to his brother. "What are you studying? Is it for History of Magic? Or is that Muggle Studies?" He stood on his tiptoes to look over Kleos's shoulder at the title, his mind still whirling around the same subject that had brought him in here. "I bet you could ask Pavel to help you, if it's dull. He knows nearly everything. Or I could help. Maybe. I, um. Read a lot of books," he offered with a sheepish smile.

Kleos sat up as the younger boy asked about the textbook he was reading, or whatever you would call this huge text. He gave a mere shrug, not in a smiling mood but gave a slight chuckle; but it was forced. He breathed out a breath, focusing on the young male's scent, before he seemed to give a sigh. Now he remembered. "Ah, right. Now I remember you younger brother. Sorry for that moment I seemed to forget about you...my mind hasn't been in the right lately so to speak." He admitted, leaning back into the chair shoving his hands into his pockets.
He listened to his brothers words, smiling just a little at him. He would try to put on a calm, steady face for his brother. He didn't want the young boy to worry. Two nagging siblings was more then enough. "Mhm, its History of Magic actually. I have an assignment do, AND a test in two days. I want to focus; but my mind isn't letting me." He paused glancing over at the younger boy.
Dexter was like him be began to notice. But he was also smart for his age, like brilliant smart. He was a perfect ravenclaw. But Dexter also was the nice kind of smart person...he didn't rub it into your face so to speak. And that's one of the reasons Kleos liked his younger brother's company. He was a good kid. And understanding.
"Why are you here anyway? Looking for another book to read or something?" He remarked, resting his chin into the palm of his hand, staring at the boy with a look dull and exhaustion, but he was listening. And interested in what the young boy had to say.

Dexter cocked his head with interest as Kleos breathed in, no doubt taking a moment to smell him. It was hard to imagine living every day of his life with the heightened sense of smell that always stung his nose around the full moon. He was sure it would give him a headache, at the very least, and he wasn't always entirely comfortable knowing some of the things you could learn about people from their smell.
Kleos let out a sigh, and he remembered him.
"Sorry for that moment I seemed to forget about you," his brother said, and Dexter believed him. "My mind hasn't been in the right lately, so to speak."
Because something Very Bad had happened, about which Dexter was not was not going to ask.
"It's okay," Dexter said, bracing both hands on the table and leaning on them with a lopsided grin when Kleos asked what he was doing there. "I'm looking for something in particular, actually - d'you know where you'd find a section on the cultural anthropology of regional nonmortal subcultures? Or just a book of nonmortal sociology? Pavel's said anything I ask him is all right, but I want to make really sure. I'm not even totally sure anything's been done about vampire culture, but I thought it'd be worth a look."
Sweeping a gaze across the books and scrolls strewn about the table, Dexter bit his lip and ventured, "If you like, you could tell me about what's on your test? I always learn things better if I teach them to someone else. Er, unless you'd like to be left alone. I can do that, too. But I really would like to hear about it."
He dropped back down on his heels and readjusted his book bag on his shoulder. He hoped he wasn't being a bother. Kleos looked tired - obviously, since he'd dozed off right in the middle of his studying - but maybe it would help him to talk to someone other than himself.

Kleos listened to his words, hearing each word that his younger brother said. He closed his eyes, before he opened them once more. Now that was a damn good question wasn't it? He gave a yawn, stretching his arms above his head. "A book on nonmortal sociology you say? Mhm, there should be a few books on us scattered immortals kiddo. I'm sure its toward the middle I think...near the mortal sociology section." He replied waving his hand in that general direction.
He paused though, hearing what else his brother said. And what he didn't say. He could just see the question in his younger brothers eyes that he had something else to ask. Now, Kleos wasn't worried about Dexter asking about him and what happened. What he was worried about was how he would react.
""If you like, you could tell me about what's on your test? I always learn things better if I teach them to someone else." Kleos smiled at his younger brothers words, moving his hand to pat his head giving it a soft ruffle. That's why he enjoyed the younger boys company. He was a good kid.
"Mhm, I suppose i could tell you whats on my test. And you know you don't have worry about asking questions that I would be upset about. I won't be. Now, lets see, what can I tell you about this test. How about its all about these notes." He replied shoving the notepad in his younger brothers direction so he could see what it was about. It was all about all advanced dark art spells. Including ones that caused pain. Those type of course.

Dexter took his brother's notes and turned them upright, then put down his bag and settled into the next chair. He loved looking at the older students' assignments. The Sixth- and Seventh-Years were the ones studying the advanced magic, the clever tricks and the details, the things Dexter really loved. He blew through the First-Year curriculum so voraciously that he was pretty sure his professors didn't know what to do with him. He didn't mean to; he would just read what he thought was interesting, and then class would begin and he would discover, to his dismay, that he'd somehow gotten four chapters ahead. Then it would be an eternity of fidgeting in class and questioning every detail until they either caught up to him or told him to save any more questions until after class.
It was a conundrum. He had yet to find a real solution.
As he scanned the notes, Dexter's eyes widened.
"They test you on these?" he murmured, taking in each spell and its effect and processing it in his mind, then moving on to the next before he could think on it too hard.
He really didn't need to think too hard about torture-spells.
Still at a hush, Dexter said, "Did you know these five on the bottom made it to the penultimate stage of consideration for being classified as Unforgivables in 1943?" He cocked his head at the last two, wrinkling his nose and easing back into a normal volume. "I think lot of Dark Arts spells can be sort of silly. Like this one. What good is it to have a spell that skins someone? I suppose if you're going to be nasty to someone, but it's not practical. If you're going to kill someone anyway, you might as well use the kill-curse and be done with it, because it's faster. Also, not so smelly. And this one? Making someone hallucinate their own death? That's just poppycock. It would just scare someone, which is just like stunning someone, and you could just use Stupefy and get the exact same effect. And it'd be a lot more powerful because you learn it as a First-Year, so you've already had a lot of time to strengthen it up."
He looked a bit longer, then handed the notes back. "It's odd they'd make you learn this stuff for a Hogwarts class. What class is it, anyway? Because the professor should know they could be breaking that policy they set up at the last Triwizard Tournament in 1994, when this fake DADA professor tried to teach Unforgivables." He couldn't hide a bit of a smile, because the tale of that Triwizard Tournament was one of his favorite historical events. "Do you know how to do all of those?"

Kleos smiled at his younger brother, unable to not give a smile at his direction. Dexter was indeed rather smart for his age. He wished he did know Dexter much more then he heard from Caddie. But then again, he wasn't in the right state of mind. He rested his chin back into his hand, closing his eyes as he listened to him rant about the spells he was tested on.
"I know some of them. DADA isn't my strong point, even if it would be something good to have. Now, there is a difference between knowing how to cast the spell, actually casting it, or even experiencing it yourself, kiddo. I know them...I just don't want too actually use them." He sighed out a breath, letting the words sink into his younger brothers head.
Experienced it he did. So hard, and painful those spells were. A shudder escaped his form, feeling the chills spread down his spine and back. Yes. He wasn't looking forward to experiencing any of those again. But that was life wasn't it? You experienced things that you never hoped to experience and now you do. Or did. Stop thinking of that! Its not helping your mind that your thinking of what happened. Its not helping at all! He cursed himself, rubbing his eyes with his fingers against the thoughts.
Perhaps it would be better if he did tell someone about what Alec done...someone else maybe? "I think I rather take a failing grade on the exam...or something. With how my mind is now, I don't think I would be able to even take the freaking exam..." He admitted to his younger brother, looking at the young werewolf next to him.

Whatever Very Bad Thing had happened to his brother, it was making him very twitchy. Dexter took in the shudders and the discomfort in silence, reminded of how Kleos could sometimes be sort of like that Muggle story, Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. (He had a copy in his bag right now, actually - they were reading it in Muggle Studies, and he'd already read it three times before getting to Hogwarts, so he'd just brought his own copy because it was a lovely old hardcover and it smelled right.) Right now he was pretty sure Kleos was being Dr. Jekyll, but when he talked like this, it got harder to tell.
"I think I would rather take a failing grade on the exam...or something," he was saying. "With how my mind is now, I don't think I would be able to even take the freaking exam."
Dexter lowered his eyes to the table, absently swinging his legs from the chair. "I don't suppose I'd like any test over those things, either," he said. "But I think it's probably a good thing that studying those types of spells makes your mind hurt. It ought to, I think."
Realizing that could come off as rather rude, he quickly elaborated, "I mean, it's good that you don't want to use them, because they're dark spells. The only people who use them are the nasty ones. It's just good to know about them, in case something...very bad happens."
He swallowed and shook his head, not wanting to think about that Very Bad Thing one bit.
"What I mean is, I think that if thinking about these sorts of spells is hard for you, it means your mind is doing just fine. It's still all right, because it still knows what's right and what's wrong. The people who like those spells, and who think that exam would be easy...they're the ones who've got something broken. In here." He tapped the side of his head.
Folding his arms on the table, he said, more softly, "I'm glad you don't like them. You probably shouldn't fail. But I think what it means is that you might not be as broken as you think you are." He sent a shy smile up to his brother and reached up to gently tap the side of Kleos's head. "In here."

He watched him quietly at the words hearing how Dexter ranted and said what he wanted. Sighing softly, he bowed his head resting his face into his arm unable to think of what else to say. He sighed out a breath, glancing over at his younger brother. When he referred to something really bad, his body tensed, and his hands gripped together tight at the thoughts.
He had to focus. He couldn't think back to that night. He had to focus on what was going on now; not what went on in the past. But he couldn't stop thinking about it. It kept coming back to his mind. Those hands were so cold against his skin, keeping him firm and pressed hard on his chest. They were freezing, so cold. A punch caused brand new bruises to form, the grip was painful on his ribs. And the cuts...the little cuts; oh they burned!
[/i] "You probably shouldn't fail. But I think what it means is that you might not be as broken as you think you are." His brother spoke again, causing him to blink against the memories, glancing back at his sibling. He chuckled at his hand poking the side of his head, and saying how he wasn't as broken as he thought. He was tempted to agree...but he just couldn't. "If you only knew Dexter...if you only knew what I been threw. I would love to agree with you that I'm not broken at all...but I am. I'm broken inside...and out." "If you only knew, Dexter," Kleos said, and Dexter supposed he was right. He didn't know, and Caddie certainly didn't want him to know, and for once, he didn't think he wanted to know, either. Not with all this talk of dark spells and all those flinches and shudders. He didn't like how his brother wilted after he said it, hiding a bit. Dexter had always been rather small, but hiding like that made his big brother look even smaller. "I'm broken inside...and out."
In his voice was a sort of hopelessness that Dexter never had been able to grasp. If you were alive, and you had people who loved you, there was hope; it seemed like it should be more complicated, but it was the only way he knew how to think about it. It made him wonder if Kleos had forgotten he had both of those things.
Hesitantly, Dexter reached over and squeezed his brother's hand. Reminded him.
With a faint smile, he said gently, "Bet you're not."
Glancing at his brother's notes, Dexter made a decision. He dug through his bag with his free hand, never letting go of Kleos's, and pulled out a carefully punctured box.
"I know you've got tests and things," he said, "but if you were falling asleep, you probably ought to take a break. I can't really help you with your assignment, but you could maybe help me with mine?" Glancing around to make sure the librarian wasn't in sight, he opened up the box and carefully pulled out a rather cranky-looking toad. "Caddie's got us Transfiguring toads into toadstools. Mine all look right, but they won't stop croaking."
It was silly, and probably terribly boring for a big Seventh-Year like Kleos, but from the way he was talking, it sounded like boring might be just what he needed right now. For just a second, when Dexter had tapped the side of his head, Kleos had laughed; he'd been distracted. If distracting him meant he could laugh again, then distracting him is what Dexter would do.
And if he happened to catch on a bit more slowly than usual, or goof up the spell in a silly way that made his brother laugh like that one more time, well.
He could be all right with that.

Kleos blinked lifting his head from his arm seeing his younger brother grasp his hand and give it a soft squeeze. He smiled in response, glad that his younger brother was understanding and wasn't questioning the way he thought. He watched his brother reaction, heard his words, and gave him a curious look when he removed the box from the floor.
"Caddie's got us Transfiguring toads into toadstools. Mine all look right, but they won't stop croaking." His brother said, causing Kleos to nod then give a soft smile in response. A laugh even escaped his lips as he heard one of the toads croak. It was such a odd sounding croak!
"Ah I remember that spell. It was rather amusing to use and watch how many of us messed it up. I think someone made their frog sing once. Now lets see," The werewolf glanced into the box at the frogs, thinking over what his younger brother could of done wrong. There were so many things... So many choices. "Lets see...what happens when you turn them back? Do they keep croaking or do they loose their croak? Cause that would be the problem. It would be how your saying spell, not casting it kiddo." He added smiling at his brother, patting his arm.
Sure it should of been boring to redo all of this over again, but it kept him distracted. And he enjoyed talking to his brother about this. Besides he was his sibling. He had to help. He gave another soft quiet smile, one that should he was pleased to help. And happy that his brother was doing this for him.

Dexter's smile broadened across his face when Kleos laughed, and he slipped his hand out of his brother's to pull out his wand. "Well, I've been doing it this way." He cleared his throat and pointed his wand at the toad, waving it in a smooth and precise swish-and-flick. "Amphibianitum transformare."
His wand captured the toad in a swirling blue glow, and when the glow faded, a perfect red-and-white spotted toadstool sat on the desk.
And then it croaked.
Dexter sighed, making a face at the toadstool as the top of it expanded and contracted like a toad's throat, emitting a muffled, rather cross-sounding series of ribbits. "See?"
Shaking his head, he reversed the spell and listened. Sure enough, the toad's throat was popping out and in, but it wasn't making any sound. "Huh. That's curious. Maybe that's why he's been so cross with me..." He patted the toad. "Sorry. I'll give you your voice back."
With another wave of his wand, he tried out a spell he'd heard one of the Fourth-Years cast once. It had sounded straightforward enough. "Voce revitalum."
A little sphere of light floated from his wand to the toad's throat, seeming to surprise it into a little hop. Its throat expanded.
And, in a surprisingly rich baritone, it crooned out (loudly), "I'VE GOT A LO-VE-LY BUNCH OF CO-CONUTS, DIDDLY-DEE! HERE THEY ARE ALL--"
Dexter gasped and pounced on it, pinching its mouth shut (it settled for humming jauntily against his fingers) and wincing when the librarian glared around the corner and shushed them loudly. "Sorry, sorry!"
Looking sheepishly up at his brother - and trying very hard not to laugh, because this was just silly - he said, "Um. I'm guessing that's how they made them sing?"
He pressed his lips together, but then the toad seemed to change its mind and started humming a rather lovely Victorian waltz, and he couldn't take it anymore. He clapped his free hand over his mouth just in time to burst out laughing.

The toad sang. It sang about...coconuts? Kleos gave a stare at the toad, but smiled. And then he broke into a soft laughter with his brother, shocked and in hysterics. A toad that could sing about coconuts!? What in the world...?
Kleos rubbed his eyes in response, feeling a tear escape his eye. Now he hasn't laughed like that in days, weeks at most! Sure, he laughed with Pavel and his lover, but he never laughed this much, this open for awhile.
It felt nice. Nice indeed.
Calming down, being he was laughing a little louder and had to focus to keep calm, he grinned at his brother. "Ah, Dexter yes that does make them sing. Your too ahead of yourself to try those spells. It'll wear you down kiddo. But yes, I see your problem. At least though, now, you know how to make toads sing. Now you just have to do a spell like that one, but lower. The spell that Caddie taught you should be doing the trick. So why hasn't it...Try pronouncing it differently. Thats probably the problem." He replied, looking at the toad as it began to hum. And gave a chuckle and a smile.

Dexter wiped at his eyes as the toad once again shifted its humming to "I Love to Laugh" from Mary Poppins (fascinating film they'd watched in Muggle Studies - Muggles went mad for it, and they didn't even know she was based on a real witch!), and finally pulled himself together and picked up his wand again for a breathless, "Finite incantatem."
At last the humming stopped. Still flushed from laughing, Dexter tentatively let go of the toad's mouth and set it back on the table, where it croaked disapprovingly back at him.
"Wow," Dexter said, huffing a breath. "So you think I'm saying it wrong? I suppose not all spells go with the original Latin emphasis patterns..." he said, trailing off into a mumble to himself.
Shaking his head, he pointed his wand at the toad once again. "Okay. Mister Toad, if this makes you feel like singing, you really need to do it quietly or we're going to get in trouble, all right?" He waved his wand again, swish and flick. "Amphibianitum transformare."
Again, the blue glow enveloped the toad, and again, it faded into a perfect toadstool. Dexter scrutinized it and waited, holding his breath.
Nothing.
He waited a moment more, just in case it decided to start hopping across the table or anything, but it did nothing of the sort. It just...toadstooled. "Huh," Dexter breathed, breaking into a smile. "That's brilliant! Thanks," he said, beaming up at his brother. He carefully reversed the spell again, and the toad went right back to an unamused croak.
Cocking his head at the toad, Dexter murmured, "So voce revitalum makes them sing." He glanced at Kleos, and at his nod, Dexter turned back to the toad, resting his chin on his arm to look it in the eye. "D'you think if we practiced, I could teach it something in Welsh to sing for Gran? She'd love it, I think."
He let his head drop to the side on his arm so he could look up at Kleos. "When you learned this spell, did you ever make anything sing? Or make a croaking toadstool, or anything? Or did you get it sorted straight away?"

Kleos smiled at his words, patting his brothers shoulder lightly. Now that was a good question--what did happen that year he first used that spell. The werewolf pondered it over in deep thought, before he rested his chin on his arms.
"Ah, I remember that Dexter. It took me a few days to figure out what I was doing wrong. I did turn a toad into a toadstool by the end of it. But before that, I did make an inanimate object sing, Bingo was his name oh. It was strange, for it was a singing piece of paper that turned into a dog. So no, I didn't get it on the first shot. I'm not that smart of a ravenclaw. Sometimes I wonder how I got sorted into ravenclaw in the first place." He replied looking at his brother.
He was negative today, but at least his brother was helping cheer him up, and keeping him from those even darker suicidal thoughts. His brother was at least helping him in that stage. "Dexter, your the best brother you know that? Cheering me up, and keeping me distracted. Thanks." He added with a chuckle patting his shoulder.
